北米西部（カリフォルニア州、アリゾナ州、バハカリフォルニア）の山地に生息する大型のコンドル（翼開長270〜300cm、体重7〜14kg）。黒い羽毛と赤・黄色の裸の頭部が特徴。Gymnogyps californianus（カリフォルニアコンドル）は1987年に野生個体が捕獲されて一時的に野生絶滅し、育種プログラムにより個体数が300羽以上に回復した保護の成功例の一つ。Cathartidae科。
