北米・中南米に広く分布する大型のハゲワシ（体長62〜81cm）。赤い裸の頭部と黒い羽毛が特徴。Cathartes aura（アカアタマコンドル）は高度に発達した嗅覚で動物の死骸を発見する数少ない鳥の一つ。上昇気流を利用して何時間もほとんど羽ばたかずに舞い上がり、「大気のハイエナ」として生態系の清掃役を担う。Cathartidae科。
