北米・北欧の湖に生息するアビ（体長70〜90cm）。夏羽は黒白のチェック模様の背面と斑のある首のネックレスが美しい。Gavia immer（アビ）は「笑い声」のような独特の鳴き声で北米の湖の夏の象徴とされる。優れた潜水能力で1分以上潜り、魚を捕食する。冬は沿岸で越冬。Gaviidae科。
