ヨーロッパからアジアにかけての森林に広く分布するキツツキ(体長22〜23cm)。黒・白の羽毛に雄の赤い後頭部と下腹部が特徴。Dendrocopos major(アカゲラ)は木に穴を掘って巣を作り、木の幹を激しくドラミングする。日本でも山地の広葉樹林や針葉樹林に生息し、秋冬には公園でも見られる。Picidae科。
