El pico picapinos (unos 85 g) es el pájaro carpintero más común y extendido de Europa. Su llamativo plumaje negro y blanco con el obispillo rojo lo hace inconfundible. El característico tamborileo con el que marca el territorio puede oírse desde lejos en los bosques caducifolios. Excava agujeros en árboles muertos o enfermos para nidificar, y sus antiguos nidos son utilizados por otras muchas especies. Se alimenta principalmente de larvas de insectos xilófagos, pero también come piñones, semillas y bayas.
