ヨーロッパ・アジアの草地で繁殖しアフリカで越冬する夜行性の鳥(体長27〜30cm)。縦縞模様の体と赤褐色の翼が特徴だが、草の中に隠れてほとんど姿を見せない。Crex crex(ウズラクイナ)は特徴的な「クレックス、クレックス」という鳴き声で存在を示す。農業の集約化により著しく個体数が減少し、ヨーロッパでは保護の最重要種。Rallidae科。
