Resident along large sandy rivers, reservoir shorelines, and open sandy ground across the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Hawks insects aerially. Largely sedentary; local nomadism.

Three-banded Courser: 26–29 cm, distinctive courser with three black-and-white breast-bands, pale creamy-brown plumage, and red eye-ring. Nocturnal resident in dry acacia woodland and savanna of eastern Africa from Ethiopia to Tanzania. Insectivorous; roosts motionless on bare ground in daytime. Cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage.
