Widespread breeder across Siberia, Russia, and northeast Asia; winters to Southeast Asia and Australia. Brood parasite targeting warblers and flycatchers. Insectivore. Long-distance migratory cuckoo.

Non-parasitic; carnivorous; eats insects and small vertebrates. Shares the same terrestrial running lifestyle as its northern relative.
