Anatomy

Cloaca

परिभाषा

The single posterior opening in birds that serves the digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.

विस्तृत व्याख्या

The cloaca functions as a multi-purpose chamber receiving outputs from the intestine, kidneys, and reproductive organs. During mating, most birds perform a brief 'cloacal kiss' to transfer sperm. In chicks, the bursa of Fabricius opens into the cloaca and is the primary site of B-lymphocyte maturation, making it central to immune development. The cloaca also plays a role in thermoregulation in some species.
