Extinct North American pigeon, 38–41 cm, slate-blue head, brick-red breast, long pointed tail. Once the most abundant bird on Earth, forming flocks of billions in eastern North American deciduous forests. Granivore of acorns and seeds. Driven extinct by market hunting and deforestation; last individual died Cincinnati Zoo, 1 September 1914.

African Collared-dove

Small dove, 26–29 cm, pale pinkish-grey with a black hindneck collar and white tail corners. Native to arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Somalia and south to Tanzania. The ancestor of the domesticated Barbary Dove (ring-necked dove). Granivore of grass seeds and small grains in dry savanna, farmland, and desert edge. Least Concern.
