के बारे में
The Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is the most widespread member of the genus Plegadis and one of the most cosmopolitan ibises in the world. Adults in breeding plumage display rich chestnut-brown and purplish-maroon tones on the head, neck, and underparts, with wings and upperparts exhibiting an iridescent green and purple gloss that gives the species its name. In non-breeding and juvenile plumages the bird appears more uniformly dark brown with fine white streaking on the head and neck. It measures 48–66 cm in length with a wingspan of 80–105 cm.
This species occupies freshwater and brackish wetlands across an extraordinarily broad geographical range, including parts of southern Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, where its range has expanded dramatically in recent decades. In North America, breeding populations were historically confined to the southeastern United States but have spread northward along the Atlantic coast. The species shows a preference for marshes, rice paddies, flooded agricultural fields, swamps, and lake margins with abundant emergent vegetation.
The Glossy Ibis feeds on a wide variety of prey, including insects and their larvae, crayfish, crabs, small fish, frogs, earthworms, and snails. Like other ibises, it forages by probing in soft substrates with its long, curved bill, relying on touch receptors in the bill tip to detect hidden prey. It also picks prey from the surface or pursues aquatic invertebrates in shallow water. Foraging frequently occurs in flocks, sometimes of considerable size.
Breeding takes place in colonies, often mixed with herons, egrets, cormorants, and other ibises, in trees or shrubs over or adjacent to water. The nest is a platform of sticks, lined with leaves and grass. Clutches typically contain three to four deep blue-green eggs, incubated by both sexes for 20–23 days. Chicks are altricial and remain in the nest for approximately three weeks before fledging over the following weeks. The species is generally monogamous within a breeding season.
Despite its broad range, the Glossy Ibis has experienced local declines in some regions due to wetland drainage, pesticide use, and disturbance at breeding colonies. However, globally it is considered Least Concern. The closely related Plegadis chihi (White-faced Ibis) of the Americas was historically considered conspecific and remains nearly identical in appearance except for the white facial feathering bordering bare red skin in breeding adults.
