Armed with multiple leg spurs. Forages on the ground for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Secretive but locally common. Least Concern.

Male rich chestnut-brown overall with dark grey face; darker brown barring on back and wings; red facial skin. Female similar but paler greyish-brown; both sexes have diagnostic red legs and feet.
