A medium-small Phasianidae spurfowl (~369 g) endemic to deciduous and scrub forests of peninsular India. Males are chestnut-red with red orbital skin; females are duller brown. Armed with multiple leg spurs. Forages on the ground for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Secretive but locally common. Least Concern.

Identification
Plumage
Male rich chestnut-brown overall with dark grey face; darker brown barring on back and wings; red facial skin. Female similar but paler greyish-brown; both sexes have diagnostic red legs and feet.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Endemic to India; resident of dry and moist deciduous forest, scrub jungle, and rocky hillsides across much of peninsular India.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous; eats seeds, berries, tubers, invertebrates, and small animals; scratches dry deciduous forest floor.

Chant
Loud, harsh 'kreek-kreek-kreek' calls from Indian jungle undergrowth; rasping and insistent. Alarm is a sharp explosive cackle. Contact calls between pairs are soft, guttural clucks.
