A large pheasant (~1.5 kg) of family Phasianidae, males with grey upper body, red-and-white spotted lower parts, and a grey lappet. Inhabits dense temperate and montane forests in northeastern India, Bhutan, northern Myanmar, and southwestern China at 1,800–3,500 m. Feeds on berries and plant material. Vulnerable due to forest loss and hunting across its northeastern Himalayan range.

Identification
Plumage
Male is orange-red and grey with dense white spots on belly; bare yellow facial skin bordered blue; yellow lappets. Female is brown streaked and spotted buff; yellow facial skin distinguishes male from other tragopans.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Resident in the eastern Himalayas and hills of northeastern India, Bhutan, and Yunnan at 1,800-3,700 m. Found in dense forest with undergrowth.
Diet & Feeding
Eats berries, seeds, leaves, and invertebrates in Himalayan and Myanmarese montane forests. Forages on steep forested slopes.

Deep, resonant 'ooo-WAAAA' wailing call echoing in NE Indian subtropical forest; slightly lower and more hollow than Satyr Tragopan. Alarm note is a sharp repeated 'kek' bark.
