One of India's most threatened birds, this tiny Phasianidae quail (~68 g) is restricted to tall grassland in the Brahmaputra floodplain of northeastern India. Extremely rarely recorded; fewer than 250 mature individuals estimated. Feeds on grass seeds. Critically Endangered from severe grassland conversion and burning.

Plumage
Male dark rufous-brown above with buff shaft streaks; reddish-brown underparts barred with dark brown and buff; pale supercilium; red bill. Female plainer brown with pale buff barring. Critically rare; NE India endemic.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Endemic to northeastern India (Assam, Manipur) and adjacent Myanmar; resident of tall wet grassland and reed beds; very poorly known.

Eats seeds, plant material, and invertebrates in tall grass and reed beds of northeast India.
