A medium-sized tinamou with grey-brown plumage and white spotting, resembling a partridge. Endemic to Chile and marginally to adjacent Argentina. Inhabits open scrub, semi-arid foothills, and agricultural areas. Common in central Chile; one of the most familiar tinamou species to Chilean wildlife watchers.

Plumage
Brown upperparts finely streaked and vermiculated black and buff. Pale supercilium. Breast spotted buff and brown. Belly pale buff to whitish. Flanks barred. Endemic to Chile; quail-like pattern.
Habitat & Range
Shrubby foothills, agricultural fields, and semi-arid scrubland from sea level to 2,800 m in central Chile and marginally in northwestern Argentina. Tolerates heavily modified landscapes and pastoreland.
Répartition géographique
Restricted to the Atacama Desert region of northern Chile. Sedentary in extremely arid coastal and inland desert habitats.
Diet & Feeding
Grazes on grasses and sedges near water; also dabbles for aquatic invertebrates; diet shifts between plants and invertebrates seasonally.

A clear, repeated 3-note whistle from Chilean matorral scrub. Call is distinctive and frequently heard in its range. One of the more vocal and accessible Nothoprocta tinamous.
