A critically endangered Phasianidae pheasant (~1.09 kg) believed extinct in the wild in central Vietnam; surviving only in captivity. Males are white-crested with blue wattles and dark plumage. Originally inhabited lowland evergreen forest. Feeds on seeds, fruits, and invertebrates. Conservation breeding programs active.

Identification
Plumage
Male with white crest; blue-black body; white upper back and wing coverts forming bold white saddle; red facial wattle. Female uniform reddish-brown with black-tipped feathers and some white on wing coverts.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Critically restricted to a small area of lowland forest in central Vietnam (Ha Tinh, Quang Binh provinces); one of the world's rarest pheasants.
Diet & Feeding
Forages on seeds, fruits, invertebrates, and small animals in Vietnamese lowland forest; scratches leaf litter.

Harsh, staccato 'kak-kak' crows with rasping quality; Vietnam endemic, one of world's rarest pheasants. Alarm is explosive loud cackle. Contact calls are low guttural clucks; rarely documented.
