A small crested tinamou closely related to the Elegant Crested Tinamou, with a shorter crest and finer streaking. Found in dry chaco woodland of Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. Terrestrial and gregarious. Poorly studied compared to its close relative.

Plumage
Closely resembles Elegant Crested Tinamou; brown-buff streaked upperparts with forward-curving dark crest. White supercilium and neck streaks. Breast spotted; belly pale. Restricted to Chaco woodland.
Habitat & Range
Dry chaco and quebracho woodland in Paraguay, southern Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Associated with sandy soils and scrubby dry forest. Avoids dense forest and humid habitats.
Répartition géographique
Found in wet forests from southern Mexico to Bolivia and southern Brazil. Sedentary in humid foothill and lowland forest.
Diet & Feeding
Grazes grasses and sedges in tundra; migratory; winter diet shifts to agricultural grain and pasture grasses in temperate regions.

Chant
Similar to Elegant Crested Tinamou but found in a more restricted Chaco range. Call is a slightly lower, slower whistled phrase from dry xerophytic woodland.
