A medium-sized partridge (~400 g) of family Phasianidae, with a rich rufous breast and finely patterned brown upperparts. Endemic to montane forests in Sichuan Province, southwestern China at 600–2,500 m elevation. Forages on the forest floor for seeds, berries, and invertebrates. Vulnerable; restricted range, habitat degraded by logging and agricultural encroachment in mountain areas.

Brown above with chestnut streaks; breast rich rufous-chestnut; throat buff-white bordered black; grey flanks streaked white; bare red eye-ring; rufous breast contrasting with grey flanks is distinctive.
Habitat & Range
Répartition géographique
Endemic to the mountains of Sichuan, China, at 1,500-2,800 m. Found in broadleaf and mixed forest. Vulnerable.
Diet & Feeding
Eats seeds, invertebrates, and berries on floor of Sichuan oak and bamboo forests. Endangered; scratches leaf litter.
