El colibrí gorjirrubí es el único colibrí reproductor del este de Norteamérica. Estas diminutas aves baten sus alas unas 53 veces por segundo y pueden volar hacia atrás, de lado e incluso, brevemente, boca abajo. Realizan un extraordinario cruce ininterrumpido de 800 km sobre el golfo de México durante la migración.
