About These Birds
Flesh-footed Shearwater
41–45 cm, wingspan 99–107 cm. All-dark sooty-brown with pale flesh-coloured feet and yellowish bill base. Breeds southern Indian Ocean islands and SW Australia; ranges to North Pacific. Near Threatened; bycatch concern. Feeds on fish and squid; follows fishing vessels.
Persian Shearwater
30–32 cm. Dark brown above; white below with dark smudging on flanks and vent. Breeds islands in the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf region. Ranges in NW Indian Ocean; poorly studied. Closely related to Audubon's Shearwater complex; feeds on fish and squid.
