About These Birds
Heinroth's Shearwater
27 cm. Small dark shearwater; all sooty-brown with pale bill. Breeds Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Critically Endangered; extremely poorly known with only a handful of records. Breeding biology almost completely unknown; one of the rarest and least-studied seabirds.
Hutton's Shearwater
38 cm. Dark above; white below; larger than Fluttering Shearwater. Breeds only in alpine zone of Kaikoura Ranges, South Island, New Zealand. Endangered; very restricted inland breeding range unique among shearwaters; feeds at sea in Tasman Sea and off south Australia.
