About These Birds
Black Nunbird
The Black Nunbird is a medium-sized puffbird with entirely glossy black plumage and a bright red bill. It inhabits humid lowland rainforests of the Guiana Shield and northeastern Amazonia, including Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil. It perches quietly in the mid to upper forest, making short sallying flights to capture large insects and small lizards.
Black-breasted Puffbird
The Black-breasted Puffbird is a stocky, large-headed bird of humid lowland forests in Panama and western Colombia, with bold black-and-white patterning and a broad black breast band. It sits motionless on exposed branches for long periods, watching for large insects, lizards, and small frogs to drop onto from above. It excavates nest burrows in the ground or in termite mounds.
