El colibrí brillante de oreja negra es un colibrí de tamaño mediano de los bosques húmedos de la cuenca amazónica y las estribaciones andinas orientales. El macho presenta partes superiores verde metálico y un gorjal iridiscente brillante. Se alimenta del néctar de diversas flores de los estratos del bosque. La hembra es más apagada.
