About These Birds
Black-winged Pratincole
Black-winged Pratincole: 24–28 cm, similar to Collared Pratincole but with entirely black underwings and no chestnut in wing-linings. Breeds on dry steppes of Kazakhstan and southern Russia; migrates to winter in sub-Saharan Africa. NT. Aerial insectivore. Declining due to steppe cultivation. Long-distance migrant.
Three-banded Courser
Three-banded Courser: 26–29 cm, distinctive courser with three black-and-white breast-bands, pale creamy-brown plumage, and red eye-ring. Nocturnal resident in dry acacia woodland and savanna of eastern Africa from Ethiopia to Tanzania. Insectivorous; roosts motionless on bare ground in daytime. Cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage.
