Restricted to humid lowland forest along the Casiquiare canal region of southern Venezuela and extreme northwestern Brazil. Associated with river-edge and flooded forest at low elevations. Rarely recorded.

Patagonian steppe, Monte scrub, Pampean grassland, and Andean foothills from sea level to 2,000 m across Argentina and extreme southern Chile. Groups near shrubs and rocky slopes. Tolerates arid environments.

Martineta copetona, 39-41 cm. Cresta larga negra, plumaje pardo estriado finamente. Habita pastizales y estepas de la Patagonia. La tinamú más común de Argentina. Preocupación menor.
