Inhabits open woodland, paddocks, parks, and golf courses across mainland Australia. Adapted to suburban environments; nests on open ground.

Great Thick-knee (Esacus recurvirostris) is a large 49–54 cm stone-curlew of South and South-East Asia. Brown above; whitish below with streaked breast; massive upturned bill; large yellow eye with black and white face markings. Inhabits shingle banks, sandy riverbeds, and lake shores from Pakistan east to South-East Asia.
