La avefría europea (unos 230 g) es un playero de campo abierto con la llamativa cresta de plumas negras, el plumaje verdoso-negro brillante en el dorso y las partes inferiores blancas. Sus vuelos acrobáticos y ruidosos y sus llamadas nasales 'peewit' son características. Se reproduce en pastizales húmedos y tierras de cultivo de Europa y Asia y forma grandes bandadas en invierno. Las poblaciones han disminuido gravemente en Europa occidental por la intensificación agrícola. Es un ave de interés de conservación prioritaria.
