La tórtola turca (unos 200 g) protagonizó uno de los más espectaculares avances de un pájaro en el siglo XX: partiendo de la India, en pocas décadas colonizó toda Europa de este a oeste, llegando a las costas atlánticas en los años 50 y 60. Actualmente es una de las palomas más comunes de los pueblos y ciudades europeas. Su arrullo trisílabo grave y repetitivo es familiar para cualquier europeo. Se alimenta principalmente de semillas. Pone huevos prácticamente durante todo el año en climas templados.
