El rascón europeo (unos 130 g) es una rállida elusiva que habita en carrizales y riberas con densa vegetación. Su inconfundible llamada, descrita como un chirrido de cerdo, es el principal indicio de su presencia. Muy escurridizo, se esconde entre la vegetación y rara vez está al descubierto. De pico largo y rojo, plumaje gris en el pecho y flancos barrados, es más fácil ver que identificar. En invierno puede encontrarse en suelos helados o costeros si los carrizales se congelan.
