El pico tridáctilo (unos 80 g) es el único pájaro carpintero europeo con solo tres dedos (los demás tienen cuatro). Se especializa en los bosques boreales de coníferas muertos o dañados por el fuego o los insectos, donde excava en la madera blanda en busca de larvas de coleópteros xilófagos. El macho tiene el píleo amarillo. Es un indicador de bosques borales maduros de alta calidad ecológica. Sus poblaciones en el sur de su área de distribución están bajo presión por la gestión forestal intensiva.
