A medium-sized New World quail (~340 g) of family Odontophoridae, with rich chestnut underparts and brownish upperparts. Endemic to the western and central Andes of Colombia at 1,200–2,500 m elevation. Inhabits humid montane cloud forest. Forages on the forest floor for seeds and invertebrates in pairs or small groups. Least Concern; restricted Colombian endemic but not currently threatened.

Entirely rich chestnut-rufous below from throat to vent; upperparts dark brown finely streaked buff; bare reddish eye-ring; small crest; deep chestnut underparts distinguish it from congeners.
Habitat & Range
Distribución geográfica
Endemic to the western Andes of Colombia at 1,300-2,400 m. Found in humid montane forest. Vulnerable.
Diet & Feeding
Eats seeds, invertebrates, and small fruits on Colombian Andean forest floor. Scratches leaf litter in pairs or small groups.
