El gorrión nival (unos 38 g) habita las zonas montañosas más altas de Europa y Asia central, siendo una de las aves que vive a mayor altitud en el mundo —se han observado individuos a más de 6.000 m de altitud en el Himalaya—. En invierno forma bandadas que bajan a altitudes más bajas. Su plumaje blanco y negro en verano es fácilmente reconocible. Se alimenta de semillas, artrópodos y material vegetal que encuentra en taludes de nieve y pedreras.
