El apapane es un vibrante capuchino hawaiano con plumaje carmesí profundo y subálulas blancas. Mide unos 13 cm. Es el ave néctar más abundante y ampliamente distribuida de Hawái. Habita en bosques nativos de ohia desde las tierras bajas hasta las alturas subalpinas. Baja con frecuencia a elevaciones menores durante el invierno para aprovechar las floraciones de ohia. Se alimenta principalmente del néctar de las flores rojas del ohia lehua. Su canto melódico se escucha frecuentemente en los bosques hawaianos.
