El cucúl de halcón del norte (Hierococcyx hyperythrus) mide 29-32 cm. Tiene partes superiores grises y un pecho naranja-rojizo que se desvanece gradualmente hacia las partes inferiores blancas con barras. Parásito de nido. Anida en el noreste de Asia y migra al sur de Asia e Indochina en invierno. Imita el aspecto del gavilán para asustar a las aves hospedadoras y acceder a sus nidos. Su llamada es inconfundiblemente distintiva.
