El águila calzada (unos 900 g) es un rapaz de tamaño mediano que presenta dos morfos de plumaje bien definidos —pálido y oscuro— y puede llegar a confundirse con un busardo. Es notable por sus habilidades de caza, que incluyen perseguir a las presas en pleno bosque con gran agilidad. Se reproduce en bosques de Europa meridional y Asia y migra al África subsahariana en invierno. La hembra suele ser mayor que el macho, como es habitual en los rapaces.
