La grulla de cuello negro anida en la meseta tibetana e hiberna en las tierras bajas del sur de China y el norte de la India. De tamaño mediano, es principalmente gris pálido con la cabeza y el cuello superiores negros y una mancha roja en la coronilla. Anida junto a lagos y humedales de alta altitud. Especie en peligro afectada por la pérdida de hábitat y el cambio climático. Considerada sagrada por los tibetanos y protegida cerca de los monasterios.
