La grulla monje es una grulla de tamaño mediano que anida en el extremo oriente de Rusia y migra al sur de China, la península de Corea y Japón. Tiene plumaje gris oscuro con parte trasera de la cabeza y cuello negros, mejillas blancas y coronilla roja. Se alimenta en arrozales y humedales durante la migración e invernada. Clasificada como vulnerable debido a la pérdida de hábitat. Forma grupos durante la migración e invernada, a veces junto con otras grullas.
