Acerca de
Chajá sureño (Chauna torquata), 80–95 cm. Ave robusta de marismas; plumaje gris con collar negro en el cuello; cara rojiza desnuda; espuelas en las alas. Habita en humedales de América del Sur templada (Argentina, Uruguay, sur de Brasil). Emite llamadas estridentes y potentes. Se alimenta de vegetación acuática.

Plumaje
Gray body plumage; head pale gray with black collar on neck. Bare red facial skin at base of bill. White wing patches visible in flight. Legs red. Belly whitish. Sexes similar and monomorphic.
Habitat & Range
Freshwater marshes, seasonally flooded grasslands, lake margins, and wet pampas from Bolivia and Brazil south through Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Tolerates cattle pastures and modified wetlands.
Distribución geográfica
Breeds on sub-Antarctic islands in the southern Indian Ocean; disperses at sea in austral winter. Pelagic outside breeding season.

Grazes grasses, sedges, and aquatic vegetation; forms large flocks; diet shifts between wetland plants and farmland crops seasonally.
