El chorlitejo grande (unos 60 g) es un playero compacto con un collar negro y blanco distintivo. Se reproduce en playas y riberas pedregosas desde el Ártico hasta el norte de Europa. El nido, una simple depresión en el suelo, está tan bien camuflado que casi resulta imposible detectarlo. Como muchos playeros, realiza la exhibición de distracción del 'ala rota' para alejar a los depredadores de los huevos o los pollos. Es un migrante de larga distancia que llega hasta el África subsahariana.
