El ampelis europeo (unos 65 g) es un ave nórdica de gran belleza, con su plumaje sedoso canela, la cresta prominente y las puntas de las alas de color rojo brillante que le dan su nombre. Se reproduce en bosques boreales y aparece de forma irregular en Europa occidental durante los inviernos en que escasean las bayas en el norte.
