El ampelis europeo (unos 65 g) es un ave nórdica de gran belleza, con su plumaje sedoso canela, la cresta prominente y las puntas de las alas de color rojo brillante que le dan su nombre. Se reproduce en bosques boreales y aparece de forma irregular en Europa occidental durante los inviernos en que escasean las bayas en el norte. Altamente gregario, se desplaza en bandadas que pueden devorar los frutos de un árbol ornamental en cuestión de minutos.
