A large hummingbird (13 cm) endemic to Jamaica. Males iridescent green above and black below with magenta throat patches. Long, curved bill. Nectarivore of forest, gardens, and plantations. The largest hummingbird on Jamaica and an important pollinator of native plants.

Endemic to Jamaica, found island-wide in forest, gardens, and scrub at sea level to 1,500 m. Rare vagrant to Cuba.

Nectarivore visiting large open flowers in gardens and forest edges. Takes small insects in aerial sallies from exposed perches.
