Er kann stundenlang reglos verharren, bevor er nach vorne stößt, um Beute mit seinem riesigen Schnabel zu ergreifen. Trotz einer Körpergröße von über einem Meter wiegt der Schuhschnabel dank seiner hohlen Knochen vergleichsweise wenig.
