Der Rubinkehlkolibri ist der einzige im Osten Nordamerikas brütende Kolibri. Diese winzigen Vögel schlagen mit ihren Flügeln etwa 53 Mal pro Sekunde und können rückwärts, seitwärts und sogar kurzzeitig kopfüber fliegen. Auf ihrem Zug überqueren sie den Golf von Mexiko in einem außergewöhnlichen, ununterbrochenen Flug von 800 km.
