Males are brilliant crimson red overall with a black face mask. Females are warm buffy brown with reddish tinges on wings, crest, and tail.

Der Rotkardinal ist der Wappenvogel von sieben US-Bundesstaaten – mehr als jede andere Art. Anders als bei vielen Singvögeln singen sowohl Männchen als auch Weibchen, häufig im Duett. Rosalöffler
Der Rosalöffler ist die einzige Löfflerart Amerikas und einer der auffälligsten Watvögel der westlichen Hemisphäre. Wie bei Flamingos stammt seine rosa Farbe von Carotinoid-Pigmenten aus seiner Beute an Krebstieren. Im 19. Jahrhundert wegen seiner Federn fast bis zur Ausrottung bejagt, haben sich die Bestände seither erheblich erholt.
