About These Birds

Cape Gannet

84–94 cm, wingspan 171 cm. White with black wingtips; yellow-buff head; blue-grey bill. Breeds only on islands off South Africa and Namibia in the Benguela upwelling. Endangered; dramatic decline due to food competition with purse-seine fisheries. Plunge-dives for anchovy.

Australasian Gannet

84–91 cm, wingspan 165–185 cm. White with black wingtips; yellow wash on head; grey-blue bill. Breeds SE Australia and New Zealand coasts; ranges throughout Australasian seas. Feeds on fish by plunge-diving from height. Closely related to Northern Gannet; declining at some colonies.
