Seine rosa Farbe stammt ausschließlich von Carotinoid-Pigmenten in seiner Nahrung aus Krebstieren und Algen. Quetzal
Der Quetzal galt den Maya und Azteken als göttlich und wurde mit der gefiederten Schlangengottheit Quetzalcoatl in Verbindung gebracht. Sein schillernd grünes Gefieder und die langen Schwanzfedern machen ihn zu einem der schönsten Vögel der Welt. Die Landeswährung Guatemalas ist nach diesem Vogel benannt.
