Gänsegeier only
Kormoran
Coasts, estuaries, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. Nests in colonies in trees, on cliffs, or on the ground.
Gänsegeier
Mountains, cliffs, and open grasslands. Nests on cliff ledges in colonies. Requires thermals for soaring flight.
Song & Call Comparison
Kormoran
Deep, guttural grunts and 'karrr' calls at colonies. Bill-clicking and hissing in threat displays. Silent at sea. Colonial noise can be deafening during the breeding season.
Gänsegeier
Generally silent; hisses and grunts at carrion with other vultures. Gives low croaking 'arrr' near nest. At colonies produces cackling and grunting — not melodic vocalizations.
Geographic Range & Migration
Kormoran
Very wide range across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia. One of the most widespread cormorant species.
Gänsegeier
Southern Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Resident in most of its range.

About These Birds
Kormoran
