Jet-black body, white face, massive orange-red bill, striking golden head tufts. Piscivore; carries multiple fish crosswise in bill. Pelagic in winter across North Pacific.

Common Murre, 38–46 cm, is among the most abundant seabirds in the North Atlantic and Pacific. Breeds on cliff ledges in huge colonies; single pear-shaped egg rolls in a circle rather than off the ledge. Piscivore; dives to 180 m for fish. Flies with rapid wingbeats; waddling gait on land.
