Die Blauracke verdankt ihren englischen Namen („Roller“) den spektakulären Roll- und Sturzflügen, die Männchen während der Balz vorführen. In weiten Teilen ihres westlichen Verbreitungsgebiets geht der Bestand durch Landwirtschaftsintensivierung und Lebensraumverlust zurück.

Der Kanadareiher ist mit einer Höhe von bis zu 1,4 Metern der größte Reiher Nordamerikas. Diese geduldigen Jäger können lange Zeit reglos verharren, bevor sie mit bemerkenswerter Geschwindigkeit nach Beute stoßen. Sie brüten in großen Kolonien, sogenannten Reiherkolonien, und kehren oft Jahr für Jahr an denselben Ort zurück.
